On Tuesday morning, the Israeli occupation army announced the launch of a large-scale ground military operation inside Gaza City, marking the most dangerous phase of the conflict since the outbreak of war on October 7, 2023. After weeks of continuous<\/a> aerial and naval bombardment that caused massive destruction and worsened the humanitarian crisis in the Strip, Tel Aviv deployed armored forces and infantry units into densely populated neighborhoods, in a scene that signals the imminent eruption of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe amid mass displacement and growing suffering for the two million besieged Palestinians.<\/p>\n

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> described the invasion as the beginning of a \u201cdecisive phase\u201d in the Strip, affirming that the military operation aims to eliminate Hamas and destroy its infrastructure. Israel, he added, continues to operate through a strategy of \u201cgradual incursion accompanied by heavy fire,\u201d prioritizing troop safety over speed on the ground.<\/p>\n

In response, Egypt\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strongly worded statement<\/a> on Tuesday, reiterating Cairo\u2019s rejection of forced displacement plans and calling for the immediate cessation of military operations. Meanwhile, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed t<\/a>he continuation of Egypt\u2019s political and humanitarian efforts to deliver aid and activate international mediation to achieve a ceasefire.<\/p>\n

On the Arab level, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called<\/a> for urgent international intervention to stop what it described as \u201ca major crime against the people of Gaza.\u201d Hamas stated that the expansion of Israeli ground attacks represents \u201ca new chapter in the genocide and ethnic cleansing campaign,\u201d urging international and Arab organizations to take action to protect civilians and halt the escalation.<\/p>\n

At the international level, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed<\/a> growing concern over mounting evidence of war crimes and acts of genocide against civilians. Calls were repeated for Israel to immediately stop the offensive and cease targeting civilians. Meanwhile, the European Union and Western parties issued renewed warnings against escalation and the worsening catastrophic humanitarian situation, demanding the opening of humanitarian corridors and the provision of relief.<\/p>\n

Forced Displacement Already Underway<\/h3>\n

Dr. Azzam Shaath, Professor of Political Science and International Law, speaking to Zawia3<\/em> from Gaza, stated that \u201cthe occupying state is pressing ahead with its military operation, which it expanded on Tuesday on the ground, forcibly displacing a large number of residents toward central and southern parts of the Strip. The aim is to reassert control and effectively reoccupy the city, entrenching a military presence that ensures its complete destruction\u2014just as the cities of Rafah and Khan Younis in the south, and towns in the north, have been devastated in recent months. The goal is to render the Strip uninhabitable, creating conditions for the forced expulsion of its population beyond Gaza, in line with traditional Israeli plans that are backed by the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shaath added: \u201cIt seems that Netanyahu and his far-right government, who are intensifying the war and military escalation, do not intend to stop at destroying the Strip alone. Their ambitions extend to other countries in the region under the pretext of eliminating Hamas and the Iran-backed armed factions.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued in his remarks to Zawia3<\/em>: \u201cAs long as there are no serious policies in place to confront Israel on the international and regional levels, and as long as the ability to pressure it to halt its open war on Gaza remains weak\u2014and while the Israeli leadership continues to treat the outcomes of the emergency Arab-Islamic summit in Doha with disdain because they lack concrete measures, even at the economic and diplomatic levels\u2014Israel will persist in violating the sovereignty of countries in the region under the pretext of targeting Hamas leadership, a justification that goes far beyond the aggression on Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n

The escalation in Gaza comes a day after the emergency Arab-Islamic summit in Doha, held amid rising regional tensions. The summit, chaired by several Arab and Islamic leaders, discussed the escalation by occupation forces within the Strip and ways to protect Palestinian civilians. Participants emphasized the need to immediately end Israeli military operations, protect civilians, and ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to the Strip. They also reaffirmed their support for Palestinian rights, condemned any forced displacement of the population, and called on the international community to apply effective pressure on Israel to stop its aggression.<\/p>\n
