On the evening of Monday, September 28, security forces raided the homes of journalists Mohamed Ashraf Abu Omeira and Abdullah Qadri, confiscating their phones and laptops. Over the hours that followed, the sweep widened: Islam Barakat from his home in Gharbia Governorate, Omar Hilal from Port Said, then Mohamed Mahmoud and Mohamed Adel from a street in Cairo, according to documentation by the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights<\/a>, which is providing legal representation to the platform’s team and has demanded that Prosecutor General Counselor Mohamed Shawki open an urgent investigation to establish where they are being held. Six names in less than one day, the platform’s entire editorial team, with no official body announcing a single charge, or even acknowledging it is holding anyone, as of the time of writing.<\/p>\n

This security sweep arrived in the middle of what the government had declared a season of media openness: a ministerial invitation to a professional “conversation,” announced preparations for an annual media conference, and a steady stream of statements about presidential directives to allow space for diverse viewpoints.<\/p>\n

“Matsda2sh” does not publish opinions, as far as is known about it, and even if it did, that would not be a crime. Its very name is its work program: don’t believe something before you verify it. The platform has been active for roughly eight years and belongs to a well-established global journalistic discipline called fact-checking, whose method is that a reporter takes a circulating claim, whether an official statement, a widely shared story, or a viral image, and matches it against original documents and data before publishing the result with evidence. The only tool of this kind of journalism is the document. It is the only profession that holds itself publicly accountable in every line it publishes.<\/p>\n

When the platform suffered its first documented crackdown, in August 2023, the details of what happened revealed the nature of the hostility toward it. A security unit raided the home of editor Karim Asaad in Al-Shorouk City at dawn, and according to documentation by the platform and the Journalists Syndicate Freedoms Committee at the time<\/a>, he and his wife were assaulted, threatened in connection with their child, and the team’s accounts were accessed and two posts deleted, both related to the identity of Egyptian passengers on a plane intercepted in Zambia carrying cash and gold. Three years later, the entire team at once. The issue is that this team refuses to let us believe the lie.<\/p>\n

A War on Rumors With No Fact-Checkers<\/h3>\n
\n

The first contradiction needs no adversaries of the state to prove; the state’s own statements are enough. Just five weeks before the crackdown, on August 20, Information Minister Dia Rashwan issued his widely covered statement to journalists, summarized in a headline from the outlet Youm7 that captures the entire official doctrine: “We Confront Rumors and Protect Freedom of Opinion With the Law.”<\/a> The rumor, by the state’s own official rhetoric at its highest level, is a declared enemy against whom an open war is being fought, with warnings at every meeting about its effect on “social cohesion.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

So what would a platform whose exclusive specialty is debunking rumors with documents be? By the logic of that very rhetoric, it would be a volunteer in the declared war, on its front line. What actually happened was the complete opposite: the soldiers of the anti-rumor war were all arrested within a single day. This contradiction has one explanation, and the 2023 deletion incident supplies it. The problem is not the existence of people who debunk false information. The problem is the existence of people who do so outside the authority of the state.<\/p>\n

Fact-checking, in official doctrine, is the state’s exclusive right. When we practice it as a professional act, using evidence we ourselves hold, we are not partners in the war on disinformation. We are rivals challenging the state’s monopoly on deciding what is true. What is required is that we simply believe.<\/p>\n

A Conversation on the Host’s Terms<\/h3>\n
\n

The second contradiction concerns the invitation on which the entire season of promises was built. In his August 20 address<\/a>, Rashwan presented himself as an old colleague before being a minister, described his message as a “necessary conversation,” and announced readiness for an annual media conference in December to implement presidential directives to open space for diverse viewpoints. But any invitation is tested not by its text but by its track record, and this invitation’s track record is documented. Zawia3 reported previously, in a piece by colleague Shaimaa Hamdi, that the “media reform” file had passed since 2023 through six consecutive official stages, including a committee that held 175 hours of discussion and whose final report Supreme Media Regulatory Council Chairman Khaled Abd El-Aziz delivered to the Prime Minister on February 5, 2026, after which we asked four editors-in-chief of independent websites and all four denied that anyone had contacted them or invited them to anything. Six stages, a final report, and 175 hours of talk, with zero results. The function of these invitations to dialogue, given this track record, is to produce the appearance of openness without its conditions: to substitute the occasion for speaking with the freedom to speak.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Then the final week of September placed the invitation and reality in one frame that admits no interpretation. On September 21, the minister met with editors of licensed news websites and proposed a “unified entity” for them to join as institutions. The journalistic community erupted. The Syndicate’s Secretary General Gamal Abd El-Rahim pointed out that any parallel union would violate Article 77 of the Constitution, which confines each profession to a single syndicate. The Syndicate’s Deputy Chairman Mohamed Al-Garhi submitted a formal memo demanding the minister himself be transferred to the non-practicing roll<\/a>. The debate went on for days<\/a>, forcing the minister to deny what had been understood from his words. One week after proposing to organize news websites into a ministry-supervised entity, an entire website’s team was arrested. These two events, side by side, explain the philosophy of the whole season: speech is welcome when it takes place inside a room where the host determines the guest list and the agenda, and becomes a crime when it happens outside it. The six journalists had not even tested the limits of the promised “conversation,” because they do not work in opinion at all. They did not talk freely, did not publicly declare a position; they practiced the minimum level of caution assumed in any functional media system: matching a claim against evidence. If this is the fate of those who verify, every person invited to the December conference should imagine what awaits those who speak.<\/p>\n

Those Who Asked the Same Questions Before Them<\/h3>\n
\n

Because this crackdown is not the first, placing it in context reveals the pattern that organizes all the cases together. On July 22, 2024, a plainclothes security unit stormed the home of Ashraf Omar, cartoonist at the news site Al-Manassa, handcuffed him, blindfolded him, and took him to an undisclosed location, where he remained disappeared for two days during which he was, according to documentation by eleven rights organizations<\/a>, beaten and threatened with electric shock, before appearing before the Supreme State Security Prosecution on the standard charges: joining a terrorist organization, spreading false news, and misusing social media. His documented “crime” was cartoons criticizing asset sales and power outages, and his detention was renewed in video sessions that sometimes lasted less than fifteen minutes<\/a>. Days before his arrest, journalist Khaled Mamdouh had been arrested and disappeared for days before appearing before the same prosecution. And in May of this year, the State Security Prosecution investigated three members of the Committee to Defend Opinion Prisoners in Case No. 4502 of 2026<\/a> on the charge of spreading false news, for no reason other than joining a committee that defends imprisoned people.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A cartoonist who criticizes asset sales. A journalist who covers news. Defenders of prisoners. Fact-checkers. Four categories that share virtually no single political position, yet share one charge that never changes. When the charge of “spreading false news” expands to encompass political satire, news coverage, legal defense, and the debunking of false news itself, the charge has permanently separated from facts and become an open-ended power. “Falsehood” here means falsehood as defined by whoever was arrested. The result: Egypt ranks 169th out of 180 countries on Reporters Without Borders’ 2026 Press Freedom Index<\/a> and is the sixth largest jailer of journalists in the world according to the Committee to Protect Journalists<\/a>, which counted 18 Egyptian journalists behind bars in its most recent report, including seven imprisoned specifically for covering the economic crisis. That was before this week’s crackdown.<\/p>\n

The timing carries its own documented irony. The sweep came days before Egypt’s new Criminal Procedure Code enters into force in October 2026<\/a>, a law the state had long marketed as a historic fix for pre-trial detention, offering seven alternatives to detention in place of three, with tighter controls on duration. The welcome for a law restricting pre-trial detention was to fill the cells in the hours before it took effect, with six detainees whose whereabouts and charges were unknown, outside any legal guarantees, old or new alike.<\/p>\n

\n

A Press Card and a Bolted Door<\/h3>\n

The crackdown opens, from another angle, the file that has been simmering under the profession’s surface for years: where does the Journalists Syndicate stand in all of this, and why are online journalists fighting to join it? The Syndicate from which the minister’s proposal wants digital publishers to have a separate “entity” is the same institution that has stood, every single time, with those not registered in its rolls. The night after the raids, the Syndicate’s Freedoms Committee issued a statement declaring full solidarity with Abdullah Qadri and Mohamed Ashraf<\/a>, describing their arrest and the search of one of their homes as “a violation of the law and the constitution,” and demanding their immediate and unconditional release alongside all those detained in opinion and publishing cases. Committee chair Iman Awf said adding new journalists to the list of detainees was “a complete disregard for law and the constitution,” then summed up, while following complaints about the arrest of six colleagues from the platform<\/a> as Syndicate Chairman Khaled Al-Balshy worked around the clock to secure their release, the philosophy of the entire moment in five words: “There is no difference between a member and a non-member.” This was the same position the Syndicate had taken with Karim Asaad in 2023, when its intervention led to his release in less than two days, and with Ashraf Omar from his very first hour, when Al-Balshy said: “We are witnessing a return to arresting journalists instead of releasing those already imprisoned whom we are demanding be freed.”<\/a><\/p>\n

This is precisely why online journalists want to join the Syndicate. And this is precisely why the door remains bolted. Syndicate membership grants a journalist legal recognition of their professional status, procedural guarantees during interrogation, social protection, and above all membership in a body that shouts when they are arrested, and that shout can make a difference, as it did with Asaad. But membership alone, and let us say this clearly, will not protect us from prison. Real protection is a legal environment in which matching a claim with evidence is not a potential crime. That said, the difference between having institutional protection and lacking it remains the difference between being arrested while a whole professional house cries out for you, and being arrested in silence documented only by a rights organization’s press release. The minister’s “entity” proposal, in this light, is not a solution to the online journalists’ crisis. It is a consolidation of their isolation: their outlets in a federation under the ministry’s eye, their individual journalists without status or protection, in the soft gap from which the entire “Matsda2sh” team was picked off.<\/p>\n

\n

When You Arrest the Testing Laboratory<\/h3>\n

All of this may seem like a professional matter affecting a small circle. It is not, for reasons that touch every citizen who pays a bill or makes a decision. The country is in the middle of a rapid sequence of consequential decisions on prices, debt, water, and land, and making sound decisions, by the government before the citizen, requires tested information. Zawia3 documented in a previous report dozens of contradictory official statements on those same files: a statement today denying what a statement tomorrow affirms. In an environment like this, independent verification is a public service in the literal sense, like a medical laboratory. It does not oppose the patient or the doctor. It simply prevents treatment from proceeding on guesswork. A state that imprisons the laboratory technicians and then complains about the spread of contagion has written its own diagnosis.<\/p>\n

And imprisoning fact-checkers hands the rumor its complete victory. A rumor is defeated by a third party the public trusts for its independence. When that party is silenced, the audience is left with two choices, each worse than the other: believe everything that reaches them and be governed by disinformation, or believe nothing at all, including accurate statements from the state itself, causing the value of any official announcement to collapse in advance. Both outcomes do deeper damage to public trust than any post that was deleted from any account.<\/p>\n

As for the message every journalist in Egypt received this week, it is no longer simply “don’t oppose us,” for that is an old message, well understood. The message now is that truth itself, stripped of any opinion, is a risk. When people in the profession absorb that, each of them will retreat one additional step from the facts, and the vacuum will advance one step, and a vacuum in the information space does not stay empty. It is filled by whoever is most willing to lie, from inside the borders and outside them. The state that fears for its social cohesion from information warfare will have disarmed it by its own hand of the finest weapon it has.<\/p>\n

In the language the profession understands, this week offered a new operational definition of false news: it is news that was fact-checked outside the authorized channels. In the language people understand: just believe us.<\/p>\n

I am a journalist who has practiced this profession for years, and I know that every line I publish reaches the reader accompanied by one question: what guarantees that this is true? The six detained journalists were part of the answer. For that reason, neither I nor any journalist who respects this profession can do anything other than stand where the Journalists Syndicate has stood and demand the immediate disclosure of where the six colleagues are being held, and their immediate release.<\/p>\n
