He had been struck in the chest during the national championship at the Olympic Centre in Maadi and was treated at a hospital in Alexandria.

His death recalled that of Modern Sport footballer Ahmed Refaat, who collapsed during a league match against Al-Ittihad Alexandria in March 2024. Refaat received hospital treatment and was discharged in April. He died on July 6, 2024, aged 31, as CAF confirmed. It also brought back memories of Al Ahly player Mohamed Abdel Wahab, who died after collapsing during training at Mokhtar El-Tetsh Stadium on August 31, 2006.

These are among several recent deaths in Egyptian sport, although the circumstances and causes differ. Al-Shams squash player Mohamed Yehia Sebaei, 17, died on January 17, 2025, after a sudden medical emergency during the Black Ball tournament and transfer to intensive care. Adham Bobo, 18, of Al-Nasr Youth Centre in Alexandria, collapsed during a joint training session with Ambrozo Youth Centre on January 24 and died. His team had been preparing for a fourth-division match.

In December 2024, Amr Kalosha, 20, of Nasser Youth Centre in Sharqia, died after collapsing while playing at Al-Helmiya Youth Centre in Abu Hammad. The previous month, Kafr El-Sheikh footballer Mohamed Shawky, 29, died in intensive care after a further cardiac arrest. He had initially collapsed during a second-division match against Al-Qazzazin.

In June 2024, Shaza Negm, 15, suffered cardiac arrest during swimming training at Tanta Sporting Club. After resuscitation and a period on a ventilator, she remained in a coma for about a month before dying. On July 21, the sports ministry announced that the body of Electricity Club rower Mohamed Amr Mostafa, 17, had been recovered following his drowning during training on the Nile.

In February 2023, boxer Ramez Hossam, 17, of Tanta’s Railway Club, died after suffering a brain haemorrhage and falling into a coma following a national youth championship bout. Such incidents involve different medical and safety questions; they do not establish a single common cause for athletes’ deaths.

<circle cx="1718" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1718" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="1930" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1930" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2142" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2142" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2354" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2354" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2566" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2566" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/>

Unequal access to emergency care

The deaths have drawn criticism of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and sporting federations over the availability of equipped ambulances, defibrillators and personnel trained to recognise and manage life-threatening emergencies.

A National Media Authority investigation published in October 2020 described stark differences between major clubs and provincial venues, and between top-flight football and lower divisions. It cited the death of Akram Hafeela, coach of Ahly Faraskour Youth Centre in Damietta, who collapsed after his side scored during a fourth-division match against Al-Rawda. According to that account, prompt first aid was not provided and there was no ambulance at the ground.

The same investigation described ambulance-hire charges that varied between governorates and competitions. It reported fees reaching EGP 3,000 for some Cairo matches and EGP 1,500 for youth and lower-division fixtures. In provincial competitions, it quoted EGP 750 for some second-division matches, EGP 500 in the third division and EGP 250 in the fourth. These are figures from the 2020 investigation, not current 2025 tariffs.

Some clubs, the investigation said, struggled to secure vehicles even when they could pay, because several matches took place on the same day, ambulances were assigned elsewhere or vehicles were under maintenance. It reported instances of funeral transport vehicles being used at football grounds—vehicles that do not replace an equipped emergency ambulance.

In September 2024, the Egyptian Football Association added a provision to the professional second division’s competition rules requiring the home club to arrange an ambulance. The reported rule called for its presence 20 minutes before kick-off or a booking receipt if it had not arrived. Without either, a referee could end the fixture and apply the competition’s forfeiture provisions.

A women’s league match between Al Ahly and ENPPI was also called off in November 2024 after no ambulance was available. Beyond the rules on paper, the central question remains whether trained staff and suitable equipment are physically present when an emergency occurs.

<circle cx="1718" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1718" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="1930" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1930" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2142" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2142" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2354" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2354" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2566" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2566" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/>

The minutes that can save a life

Mohamed Allam, a specialist in sports injuries and physical rehabilitation, tells Zawia3 that ambulances and defibrillators must be close to playing areas, with staff ready to intervene immediately. He stresses the importance of recognising serious symptoms and initiating appropriate resuscitation when a player suffers cardiac arrest.

A heart attack and cardiac arrest are different emergencies. When a person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, the priority is to summon emergency help, begin CPR and use an automated external defibrillator as soon as available. Treatment should not wait for the ambulance. Oral medication must not be given to an unconscious person. Aspirin for suspected cardiac chest pain has specific conditions and contraindications; it is not a general prescription for a collapsed athlete or a child. These distinctions follow 2024 American Heart Association and American Red Cross first-aid guidance.

Ahmed Ashraf Eissa, a consultant in cardiology and sports cardiology, says sudden collapse in a young athlete can have several causes. These include electrical disorders of the heart, inherited conditions and, less commonly in younger people, coronary or pulmonary vascular problems. The precise cause in an individual case requires clinical investigation.

Eissa also warns about myocarditis and other cardiac inflammation following viral illness. Returning to strenuous exercise without appropriate recovery or assessment can be dangerous when heart inflammation is present. This does not mean every cold leads to myocarditis; his concern is that symptoms and individual risks should not be dismissed.

He argues that sports cardiology and psychological rehabilitation deserve greater attention. After a severe injury, athletes may fear recurrence and lose confidence. Those who must stop competing need support to adapt to that change as well as treatment for their physical condition.

<circle cx="1718" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1718" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="1930" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1930" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2142" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2142" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2354" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2354" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2566" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2566" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/>

Screening must connect to an emergency plan

Mohamed Hassan Khalil, a retired cardiologist and head of the Right to Health Committee, links repeated deaths to weaknesses in comprehensive medical assessment. Athletes in demanding contact or competitive sports, including football, basketball and squash, need evaluation suited to their history, symptoms and the demands of their sport, he says.

He highlights clinical assessment and family history, particularly unexplained deaths at a young age, alongside cardiac tests selected by the doctor. An ECG and echocardiogram may help investigate concerns, with additional imaging when clinically indicated. Specialist referral is important when a team doctor suspects an underlying problem. Screening cannot identify every future emergency and does not remove the need for an immediate response plan.

Khalil says a trained emergency clinician or responder should be available to recognise critical deterioration and start first aid or CPR while an ambulance is summoned. Defibrillation equipment must be accessible rather than treated as a substitute for trained staff.

A functioning emergency system needs an initial response, a route to more advanced care, and reliable transport and communication between them, Khalil argues.

He criticises gaps in the wider health system’s organisation and in practical training for young doctors. In his view, crowded medical curricula do not consistently prepare graduates to identify, prioritise and manage critical cases quickly.

<circle cx="1718" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1718" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="1930" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1930" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2142" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2142" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2354" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2354" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2566" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2566" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/>

Parliamentary demands for accountability

In mid-March 2025, MP Mahmoud Essam submitted a parliamentary question to Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar and the minister of youth and sports over medical provision at sporting events. He accused both ministries of failing to ensure adequate safety arrangements.

At the time, Youssef Ahmed Mostafa had been in a coma for more than a month after the chest injury sustained during the national karate championship. Essam cited the case alongside Ahmed Refaat’s death and called for an investigation into emergency-response failures.

In his submission, the MP alleged that Youssef was left for half an hour without urgent specialist intervention and that the venue lacked the required doctors and equipped ambulances. He argued that delayed care had grave consequences. These are allegations raised in his parliamentary intervention, rather than findings of a completed medical or judicial investigation.

Essam said combat sports require medical units capable of responding to serious injuries. He called for emergency doctors, resuscitation-equipped ambulances and rapid transfer plans coordinated with nearby hospitals at every event, particularly higher-risk competitions. He also proposed stronger penalties for breaches, a national emergency fund for critical cases and upgrades to clubs’ medical infrastructure.

Ashraf Hatem, chair of parliament’s health committee, tells Zawia3 that the repeated deaths require attention to rhythm disturbances, sudden cardiac arrest and inherited conditions. He also raises the potential risks of substances taken to stimulate performance or build muscle. That is a general risk factor he identifies; it is not evidence that the athletes named in this report used such substances.

Hatem says the health and sports ministries discussed providing defibrillation equipment at grounds during a meeting attended by the committee, but implementation requires resources and preparation. He places responsibility for ensuring an equipped ambulance and suitable medical cover on the relevant federation and host club.

The 2024/25 budget for provincial youth and sports directorates was approximately EGP 4.323 billion, an expected increase of about EGP 967.8 million over the previous year’s expenditure allocations. This is the directorates’ overall budget, not a dedicated emergency-medicine allocation.

Government figures cited in the report put the economic returns of sports-sector projects at about EGP 1.97 billion in 2023, compared with EGP 843.91 million in 2018, an increase of roughly 133%. The sector’s share of GDP was estimated at 0.67% in 2022/23, with a target of 3% by 2030. The target is not an achieved share.

As sports investment and ambitions grow, the accounts gathered here expose a more immediate test: whether an athlete who collapses can receive rapid, competent care wherever they train or compete. Equipment, trained responders, clear responsibility and a workable transfer plan must operate together if emergency provision is to protect lives beyond the best-resourced clubs.

A succession of young athletes’ deaths raises urgent questions about screening, ambulances, trained responders and access to defibrillators beyond Egypt’s best-resourced clubs.

[413

1550
post-17606","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-society-en","kateb-aya-yasser
["GET
