Grand Imam of Al-Azhar: The Time Has Come to Stop the “Heinous Criminal Wars” on the Land of Palestine<\/h3>\n

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed El-Tayeb, expressed his condemnation of the “terrorist” killing machine targeting peaceful citizens, women, men, children and infants in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n

Speaking by video during the signing ceremony of the Abu Dhabi Interfaith Statement for Climate and the opening of the first Faith Pavilion at COP28, El-Tayeb said: “It is the cry of a human being stunned by the horror of the infernal terrorist killing machine wielded by the hard-hearted among peaceful citizens, women, men, children, infants and premature babies, and by the scenes of violence, sabotage and destruction witnessed by the usurped land of Palestine.”<\/p>\n

He continued: “I say to the whole world that the time has come to stop these heinous criminal wars, and I affirm that if they continue like this, God forbid, there will be no environment left for us to preserve, nor a climate to keep clean for our children and generations in the near or distant future.”<\/p>\n

The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar expressed his appreciation for the exceptional commitment undertaken by the United Arab Emirates and its President, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to confront one of the greatest challenges humanity suffers from today: climate change and the accumulation of its negative effects.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that the death toll of the Israeli aggression on Gaza has risen to more than 15,207, according to the latest statistics of the Government Media Office in Gaza.<\/p>\n

The Government Media Office revealed in a statement that about 70% of those killed are children and women, including 280 health workers and 26 civil defence crew members.<\/p>\n

The statement pointed to the number of missing rising to more than 7,500, either under the rubble or with their fate still unknown, while the number of injured reached 40,650 Palestinians.<\/p>\n

800 Palestinians Killed since the War Resumed<\/h3>\n

Palestinian medical sources revealed that the number of people killed from the end of the truce until Sunday morning had reached about 800, in the areas of Wadi Khansa, Shanouh, Jabalia and Salah al-Din Street in the centre of the besieged Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n

The Palestinian news agency said that Israeli aircraft launched a series of violent air strikes on citizens’ homes in the Sheikh Nasser and Bani Suheila areas.<\/p>\n

It added that shrapnel reached an UNRWA school sheltering hundreds of displaced people.<\/p>\n

According to the agency, Israeli artillery shelled the eastern agricultural areas of the city of Khan Younis.<\/p>\n

The Israeli army announced that it had struck more than 200 targets in the Gaza Strip on the first day of the new phase of the war on Gaza.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Palestinian media sources reported that Israeli warships were intensifying their shelling of the Khan Younis coast.<\/p>\n

Egypt Condemns the Collapse of the Truce and Stresses Again: No to Displacement<\/h3>\n

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued<\/a> a statement on Friday condemning the collapse of the truce and the renewed Israeli bombardment of the besieged Gaza Strip, warning of the consequences of the forced displacement of Palestinians outside their land, amid Israeli talk of an operation in the south of the Strip, which borders Egypt.<\/p>\n

Egypt expressed its strong condemnation of “the collapse of the truce, the renewal of violent bombardment and the resumption of Israeli military operations, which resulted in renewed casualties among Palestinian civilians”.<\/p>\n

It considered the matter “a serious setback and a disregard by the Israeli side for all the efforts made over the past days”.<\/p>\n

It stressed that “extending the truce aims to stop the bloodshed of innocent Palestinians and secure the delivery of more urgent humanitarian aid to the Strip’s residents”.<\/p>\n

Egypt warned of “the consequences of expanding Israeli military operations in the south of the Gaza Strip, and of calls by Israeli officials to displace Palestinians outside the borders of Gaza”.<\/p>\n

It considered this “a flagrant violation of Israel’s obligations as the occupying power and of all the provisions of international humanitarian law, especially the provisions of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949”.<\/p>\n

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry affirmed Cairo’s firm position rejecting the forced displacement of Palestinians outside the borders of their land, as a red line that will not be allowed to be crossed.<\/p>\n

Egypt renewed its call on influential international parties and the relevant UN bodies, led by the Security Council, to assume their responsibilities to ensure the protection of Palestinian civilians and stop attempts and plans to push them to flee outside their country.<\/p>\n

It stressed the importance of the actual implementation of the two resolutions issued by the Security Council and the General Assembly in this regard.<\/p>\n

Israel Ready to Negotiate a New Truce<\/h3>\n

A senior Israeli official said that Israel is ready to negotiate a ceasefire and the detainees held by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip, but while fighting continues.<\/p>\n

The official, who spoke to Reuters in Washington, said that Israel is ready to give additional pauses and that negotiations can take place while the fighting continues.<\/p>\n

He added that releasing as many detainees as possible is a “top priority” for Israel, and said: “We have learned lessons from our operations in northern Gaza and we are applying them.”<\/p>\n

The official, who asked not to be named, said that Israel is working on a plan to reduce harm to civilians in any operation in southern Gaza.<\/p>\n

Reuters also quoted a US official, whom it described as senior, as saying that the United States is working with Israel “on a plan to reduce harm to civilians”.<\/p>\n

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had said that Israel bears a moral responsibility to protect civilian lives, while US Vice President Kamala Harris spoke of the devastating consequences of the scale of suffering facing the Strip.<\/p>\n

“UNICEF”: No Safe Place in Gaza<\/h3>\n

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) considered the Israeli leaflets asking Palestinians to move to safe areas “closer to mockery”, amid escalating Israeli bombardment of the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n

The organisation’s spokesperson James Elder, who is in the city of Khan Younis in the south of the Gaza Strip, told the BBC: “There is no safe place.”<\/p>\n

Residents of the area described the air strikes there as the most violent since the start of the war. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have already fled to the south after the unprecedented bombardment forced them out of the northern areas, the area that was Israel’s target in the early stages of the war.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip reported that more than 199 people have been killed since Friday, after the end of the truce that lasted a week.<\/p>\n

The Occupation Released 240 and Arrested 300<\/h3>\n

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society revealed that Israel released 240 women and children under the initial exchange deal, but arrested 300 Palestinian men and women during the same period.<\/p>\n

The head of the society, Abdullah Al-Zaghari, called on international institutions to do their duty and form an international commission of inquiry to visit Palestinian prisoners and look into their conditions in Israeli prisons.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Al-Quds newspaper, he warned of what he described as a further escalation by the occupation targeting Palestinian prisoners in jails after the end of the truce, adding that the testimonies of those released show that they were subjected to abuse and torture to the point that some had their ribs broken and others died.<\/p>\n

“Hamas”: No Concession on Emptying the Prisons, and We Struck a Position of 60 Israeli Soldiers<\/h3>\n

Deputy head of Hamas’s political bureau Saleh al-Arouri said that no negotiations are currently under way, and that Hamas has only current and former soldiers left, over whom it will negotiate only after the war has ended completely and definitively, and that the price for their release will be the release of all Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons.<\/p>\n

Hamas announced today, Sunday, that it detonated 3 explosive devices against a force of 60 Israeli soldiers at one of their positions east of the Juhr al-Dik area in the centre of the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n

Hamas said in a statement on Telegram<\/a>: “At dawn on Sunday, a position of dozens of Israeli army soldiers (60 soldiers) was spotted inside tents at a deployment point east of Juhr al-Dik.”<\/p>\n

The statement added: “The movement planted 3 anti-personnel devices in a circle around the position, and at exactly 4:30 a.m. the devices were detonated.”<\/p>\n

The Israeli army<\/a> announced on Saturday that it had targeted the commander of Hamas’s Shujaiya Battalion. Israeli bombardment also hit a house east of Rafah in the south, killing 9.<\/p>\n

“Red Cross”: Everything in Gaza Is “Collapsing”<\/h3>\n

Robert Mardini, Director-General of the International Committee of the Red Cross, said that the renewed fighting in Gaza is intense, as Israel continues to launch air and artillery strikes on the Strip a day after the collapse of a week-long truce with the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.<\/p>\n

The Israeli army said it had struck 400 militant targets and killed an unspecified number of Hamas fighters over the past twenty-four hours.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Reuters during the UN Climate Change Conference COP28 in Dubai, Mardini said: “We do not have accurate reports, but what I can say is that the resumption of fighting has been intense again.”<\/p>\n

He added that this is “a new level of destruction added to the immense, unparalleled destruction of vital infrastructure, civilian homes and residential neighbourhoods”, warning that the violence will make it difficult to bring humanitarian aid into Gaza.<\/p>\n

Mardini described Gaza as being in a state of “chaos and rubble”.<\/p>\n

He said the ICRC has 130 staff working there.<\/p>\n

Israel and Hamas traded accusations of causing the collapse of the truce, during which the Palestinian movement released hostages it was holding in exchange for Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners from its jails.<\/p>\n

Mardini said that Gaza’s residents “live in constant fear of violent death” and struggle to survive amid shortages of food and water because of the fighting, while hospitals operate with limited resources. He added: “Everything in Gaza has reached breaking point.”<\/p>\n

Mardini said: “We are ready to facilitate more releases of hostages in Gaza and of Palestinian detainees so that they can be reunited with their families.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
