An old document of criminal convictions against prospective presidential candidate Farid Zahran spread on social media, stating that Zahran has been sentenced in criminal cases, which would prevent him from running. However, Maha Abdel Nasser, deputy head of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party headed by Zahran, said that this document had been circulated 8 months ago, when Dr Farid Zahran ran for the party’s presidency, and that she “asked Farid Zahran to obtain an official criminal record certificate last April 2022, given the need to verify his criminal status so that he could run for the party’s presidency, and it was indeed issued, and it is free of criminal convictions”. She wondered: “Why has he not been arrested so far to carry out the sentences in the circulated document?” and explained that “there are specific opponents who published this document”.

Regarding the party’s preparations to support its candidate’s bid for the presidency, Abdel Nasser said the party is relying on MPs’ endorsements, given that it is represented by 7 members in the House of Representatives, in addition to relying on friendly parties and exploring this aspect, and explained that “MPs’ endorsement is the easiest for the Egyptian Social Democratic Party given the shortage of time”.

Candidacy applications are expected to be received daily from 5 October to 14 October, with the Egyptian presidential election held abroad on 1, 2 and 3 December 2023, and inside Egypt on 10, 11 and 12 of the same month. In the event of a run-off, the election will be held outside Egypt on 5, 6 and 7 January 2024, while the dates set for the election inside Egypt will be 8, 9 and 10 of the same month.
