Since then, this committee has reviewed prices every 3 months, according to oil prices on global markets, the exchange rate on the local market and the transport, operating and production costs of petroleum products.<\/p>\n<p>On 2 March this year, the Egyptian government decided to raise fuel prices by about 75 piastres for 80-octane petrol, the most consumed car fuel locally, and raised the price of 92-octane and 95-octane petrol by about one pound per litre. The next increase in fuel prices came on Saturday, 5 July 2014, after the presidential election and Sisi&#8217;s inauguration as president of Egypt, and the Egyptian government said at the time that the subsidy system was consuming 20% of the state&#8217;s general budget. At the beginning of Sisi&#8217;s rule, petrol and diesel prices rose by up to 78% compared with what they had been in Mohamed Morsi&#8217;s days, while the price of natural gas for vehicles rose to EGP 1.10 per cubic metre from EGP 0.40, an increase of 175%.<\/p>\n<p>The price of 92-octane petrol rose to EGP 2.60 per litre, an increase of 40% over the previous price of EGP 1.85, and 80-octane petrol to EGP 1.60 per litre, an increase of 78% over the previous price of EGP 0.90.<\/p>\n<p>The price of diesel rose to EGP 1.80 per litre from EGP 1.10, an increase of 63%.<\/p>\n<p>The price of 95-octane petrol for luxury cars, which make up a limited share of vehicles in Egypt, reached EGP 6.25 per litre.<\/p>\n<p>Two years into Sisi&#8217;s rule, with economic crises continuing, the government forced to float the pound to counter the dollar&#8217;s rise on the black market to record levels, and the state seeking a USD 12 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund, raising fuel prices again became inevitable.<\/p>\n<div class=\"z3-article-separator\" role=\"separator\" aria-label=\"Section divider\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" viewBox=\"0 140 4269 130\" preserveAspectRatio=\"xMidYMid meet\" aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\"><path d=\"M120 211H4149\" fill=\"none\" stroke=\"#7e7e7e\" stroke-width=\"10\"\/><circle cx=\"1718\" cy=\"211\" r=\"56\" fill=\"#fafafa\" stroke=\"#9c9c9c\" stroke-width=\"3\"\/><circle cx=\"1718\" cy=\"202\" r=\"50\" fill=\"#647580\" stroke=\"#4e5962\" stroke-width=\"4\"\/><circle cx=\"1930\" cy=\"211\" r=\"56\" fill=\"#fafafa\" stroke=\"#9c9c9c\" stroke-width=\"3\"\/><circle cx=\"1930\" cy=\"202\" r=\"50\" fill=\"#647580\" stroke=\"#4e5962\" stroke-width=\"4\"\/><circle cx=\"2142\" cy=\"211\" r=\"56\" fill=\"#fafafa\" stroke=\"#9c9c9c\" stroke-width=\"3\"\/><circle cx=\"2142\" cy=\"202\" r=\"50\" fill=\"#647580\" stroke=\"#4e5962\" stroke-width=\"4\"\/><circle cx=\"2354\" cy=\"211\" r=\"56\" fill=\"#fafafa\" stroke=\"#9c9c9c\" stroke-width=\"3\"\/><circle cx=\"2354\" cy=\"202\" r=\"50\" fill=\"#647580\" stroke=\"#4e5962\" stroke-width=\"4\"\/><circle cx=\"2566\" cy=\"211\" r=\"56\" fill=\"#fafafa\" stroke=\"#9c9c9c\" stroke-width=\"3\"\/><circle cx=\"2566\" cy=\"202\" r=\"50\" fill=\"#647580\" stroke=\"#4e5962\" stroke-width=\"4\"\/><\/svg><\/div>\n<h3>A Timeline of Fuel Prices from 2008 to 2023<\/h3>\n<h4>2023<\/h4>\n<p>The Egyptian government decided to raise petrol prices in March 2023 as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>80-octane petrol now costs EGP 8.75 instead of EGP 8.00.<\/li>\n<li>92-octane petrol now costs EGP 10.25, after it was EGP 9.25.<\/li>\n<li>95-octane petrol now costs EGP 11.50 instead of EGP 10.75.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>2022<\/h4>\n<p>2022 saw four changes in fuel prices, the first in January, the second in April, the third in July and the last in October.<\/p>\n<p><strong>July 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The prices of all three types of petrol rose:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>80-octane petrol: EGP 8.<\/li>\n<li>A litre of 92-octane petrol rose to EGP 9.25.<\/li>\n<li>95-octane petrol, the least used, reached EGP 10.75.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>April 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>80-octane petrol: EGP 7.50.<\/li>\n<li>92-octane petrol was priced at EGP 8.75.<\/li>\n<li>95-octane petrol: EGP 9.75.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>February 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>EGP 7.25 per litre of 80-octane petrol.<\/li>\n<li>EGP 8.50 per litre of 92-octane petrol.<\/li>\n<li>EGP 9.50 per litre of 95-octane petrol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>2021<\/h4>\n<p>Prices changed twice in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>EGP 7 per litre of 80-octane petrol.<\/li>\n<li>EGP 8.25 per litre of 92-octane petrol.<\/li>\n<li>The price of 95-octane petrol was then EGP 9.25 per litre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>July 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prices rose by 25 piastres per litre without touching fuel oil and diesel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>April 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It included an increase of 25 piastres per litre without touching diesel:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>EGP 6.50 per litre of 80-octane.<\/li>\n<li>EGP 7.75 per litre of 92-octane.<\/li>\n<li>EGP 8.75 per litre of 95-octane.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>2019<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>95-octane petrol: EGP 9 per litre instead of EGP 7.75.<\/li>\n<li>92-octane petrol: EGP 8 per litre instead of EGP 6.75.<\/li>\n<li>80-octane petrol: EGP 6.75 per litre instead of EGP 5.50.<\/li>\n<li>Diesel: EGP 6.75 per litre instead of EGP 5.50.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>2018<\/h4>\n<p>The Egyptian government formed the automatic pricing committee in 2018, and since then it has reviewed prices every 3 months. This year saw an increase in 80-octane petrol that reached 50%.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The price of 80-octane petrol rose from EGP 3.65 to EGP 5.50 per litre.<\/li>\n<li>The price of 92-octane petrol rose from EGP 5 to EGP 6.75.<\/li>\n<li>The price of 95-octane petrol rose from EGP 6.60 to EGP 7.75.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>2017<\/h4>\n<p>On 29 June 2017, the government announced a new increase in petrol prices as part of the plan to lift fuel subsidies, as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>80-octane petrol: EGP 3.65 per litre instead of 235 piastres.<\/li>\n<li>92-octane petrol: EGP 5 per litre instead of 350 piastres.<\/li>\n<li>Diesel: from 235 piastres to EGP 3.65.<\/li>\n<li>Butane gas: from EGP 15 to EGP 30 per cylinder.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>2016<\/h4>\n<p>Coinciding with the decision to float the pound against the dollar on 4 November 2016, petrol and diesel prices rose at the same time as the flotation of the pound:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>80-octane petrol from EGP 1.60 per litre to EGP 2.35 per litre, an increase of 75 piastres.<\/li>\n<li>92-octane petrol from EGP 2.60 to EGP 3.50 per litre, an increase of 90 piastres.<\/li>\n<li>Diesel from EGP 1.80 to EGP 2.35 per litre, after an increase of 55 piastres.<\/li>\n<li>Vehicle gas from EGP 1.10 to EGP 1.60 per cubic metre, an increase of 50 piastres.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>2014<\/h4>\n<p>In July 2014, the government announced an increase of 50% on petrol and diesel:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The price of a litre of 80-octane petrol jumped from 90 piastres to 160 piastres.<\/li>\n<li>The price of a litre of 92-octane petrol rose to 260 piastres.<\/li>\n<li>The price of 95-octane petrol then rose to EGP 6.25.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Egyptian authorities had recently held talks with the International Monetary Fund on the economic policies and reforms the Fund would support through a new financing programme.<\/p>\n<p>The Fund said in July 2022 that a team from it had visited Cairo to discuss the Fund&#8217;s support for the Egyptian government&#8217;s comprehensive economic reform programme, and that the Fund would continue its joint discussions with Egypt in the coming period to reach an agreement.
