Those present also listened to recorded testimonies from the wife of political activist Mohamed Adel and the mother of translator and child rights activist Marwa Arafa, about the violations both are subjected to in detention and the human suffering the two families are going through as a result of their continued imprisonment for years over their political views opposing the ruling political system in Egypt.

For her part, Laila Soueif revealed that she was able to visit her son in prison on his birthday, taking advantage of the Prison Authority opening visits on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and that she insisted on bringing him cake so he could celebrate with his cellmates, despite the conditions of his detention and the hunger strike she is waging. She stressed that the council’s surroundings witnessed a heavy security presence and friction between security and the figures who came to submit the complaint, and that a security officer forcibly took her phone to prevent her from filming the event, before she managed to retrieve it. The delegation was allowed to enter the council, but officials refused to receive or examine the complaint on the grounds of lack of jurisdiction.

At a time when Laila Soueif has been on hunger strike for more than 50 days in protest at the failure to count the pretrial detention period of her son Alaa Abd El-Fattah, human rights circles in general believe that releasing Alaa Abd El-Fattah and others held in opinion cases, and releasing all those politically detained for more than two years, is the guarantee by which the authorities can prove their seriousness about national reconciliation, the national dialogue and political reform in Egypt.

Activists gather at Laila Soueif’s home on Alaa Abd El-Fattah’s birthday as her hunger strike passes 50 days in protest at his continued detention.

[390
18789,19140,19143,19139,19138,19142,508,19141,14258,14257
710
post-18295","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-human-rights","tag-alaa-abd-el-fattah","tag-case-1228-of-2021","tag-code-of-criminal-procedure-article-482","tag-hunger-strike-egypt","tag-laila-soueif","tag-marwa-arafa","tag-mohamed-adel","tag-mohamed-oxygen","tag-political-prisoners-egypt","tag-pretrial-detention-egypt","kateb-zawia3-com
["GET
