The increases were as follows:

The price of a litre of 80-octane petrol rose by EGP 1.25 to EGP 12.25 instead of EGP 11.

The price of a litre of 92-octane petrol also rose by EGP 1.25 to EGP 13.75 instead of EGP 12.50.

The price of a litre of 95-octane petrol increased by 11.1% to EGP 15 per litre, instead of EGP 13.50 before the increase.

In a statement by Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, reported by Reuters, it was announced that the prices of petroleum products would continue to rise gradually until December 2025. This step comes as part of a series of increases the country has witnessed over the past three years as a result of the acute economic crisis that led to a significant decline in the value of the Egyptian pound against the US dollar.

Assistant Minister of Petroleum Khaled Osman stressed during a television interview that the state loses about EGP 450 million a day because of fuel subsidies. He pointed out that Egypt is one of the cheapest countries in the region for petroleum product prices. These statements come at a time when the government is seeking to reduce the financing gap and balance the state budget.

The Egyptian government expects to save about EGP 36 billion in the state budget after raising fuel prices for the second time in 2024, according to a report published by Asharq Bloomberg. This increase aims to reduce subsidies and improve the state’s financial situation amid mounting economic challenges.

Evolution of the price of a litre of 80-octane petrol from 2014 to 2024

<circle cx="1718" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1718" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="1930" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1930" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2142" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2142" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2354" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2354" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2566" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2566" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/>

Historical Background of Petrol Price Increases

These increases are part of the government’s ongoing strategy to reduce fuel subsidies and balance the state budget. Citizens suffer from a general rise in the cost of living because of these increases. Low-income groups bear the greatest burden of these increases, as the cost of transport and energy rises, affecting their purchasing power and increasing their financial burdens.

Fuel prices in Egypt are reviewed every 3 months, according to a mechanism based on the price of a barrel of oil on global markets and the movement of the dollar against the pound. Any difference between the price data and what citizens may see on the ground may therefore be due to changes in currency exchange rates against the US dollar on the one hand, and to the gap between the official exchange rate and the market exchange rate on the other.

Egypt is suffering from a deep economic crisis, and the Egyptian government says the measures it is taking, including reducing fuel subsidies, are important to reform the situation. The Egyptian government currently spends billions of dollars subsidising fuel and energy prices for millions of citizens. These subsidies have been criticised by many government officials and economists, including experts at the International Monetary Fund, which recently increased the size of its loan to Egypt.

In its report issued in April, the International Monetary Fund recommended cutting fuel subsidies in Egypt from EGP 331 billion (USD 6.8 billion) in the 2023-2024 fiscal year to EGP 245 billion (USD 5.1 billion) in 2024-2025. Madbouly stressed that Egypt cannot bear the increasing consumption and rising global prices.

Egypt faces an acute economic crisis as a result of a shortage of foreign currency, which pushed the Central Bank of Egypt in March to liberalise the pound’s exchange rate, causing it to lose a third of its value against the US dollar. This decision was followed by a new agreement with the International Monetary Fund to increase the size of the loan from USD 3 billion to USD 8 billion.

The flow of investment and financing from the UAE, the International Monetary Fund and the European Union has eased Egypt’s chronic shortage of foreign currency. However, since the end of 2022, the Egyptian currency has lost two thirds of its value, and inflation reached 40% last year, significantly affecting citizens’ lives.

Evolution of the price of a litre of 95-octane petrol from 2014 to 2024

Sources:

Egyptian Government

Middle East News Agency

Central Bank of Egypt

Asharq Bloomberg

Petrol prices in Egypt have risen repeatedly from 2014 to 2024 as a result of the economic crisis and the decline in the value of the Egyptian pound.

[409
19695,10280,19694,9457,19696,19693,18486,19631,19697,19692
710
post-18510","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economics-en","tag-80-92-95-octane-prices","tag-cost-of-living-egypt","tag-egypt-fuel-subsidies","tag-egyptian-pound-devaluation","tag-fuel-price-history-egypt-2014-to-2024","tag-fuel-price-increase-july-2024","tag-fuel-pricing-committee-egypt","tag-imf-loan-egypt","tag-mostafa-madbouly-fuel-prices","tag-petrol-prices-egypt","kateb-zawia3-com
["GET
