The trial was then moved to the court complex at the appeals office of the Badr Reform and Rehabilitation Centre, and the court heard the defendants’ trial over successive sessions.

In September 2021, the court heard the referral order in the Platform events case, in which the Public Prosecution accused the first to sixth defendants of leading, during July 2013 in the Second Nasr City police district, a group established in violation of the law whose aim was to call for suspending the provisions of the constitution and the law, preventing state institutions and public authorities from carrying out their work, attacking citizens’ personal freedom and the public freedoms and rights guaranteed by the constitution and the law, and harming national unity and social peace. The first defendant led the Muslim Brotherhood as “General Guide”, and the second to sixth defendants held leadership positions in it as “members of the group’s Guidance Office and General Shura Council”, a group that aims to change the system of government by force and to attack members and facilities of the armed forces and police and public facilities.

They also supplied the group in question, established in violation of the law, with material assistance, weapons, ammunition and incendiary devices, and, with other unknown persons, organised an assembly whose purpose was to commit premeditated murder in implementation of a terrorist purpose, to use force, violence and threats against public employees to force them unlawfully to refrain from performing their duties, and to deliberately sabotage public buildings and property and those allocated to government interests and public utilities in implementation of a terrorist purpose, as well as a show of force and brandishing violence.

<circle cx="1718" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1718" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="1930" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1930" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2142" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2142" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2354" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2354" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2566" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2566" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/>

Amid Falling Revenues… A Plan to Double the Suez Canal

Lieutenant General Osama Rabie, head of the Suez Canal Authority, announced that a project to fully double the canal is being studied in cooperation with two international companies, in light of the challenges the Suez Canal currently faces as a result of the Houthis intercepting ships heading to the occupied territories in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

This came in Lieutenant General Osama Rabie’s speech during his participation in the annual international conference on maritime transport and logistics (MARLOG) yesterday, Sunday. Rabie said: “We also studied fully doubling the Suez Canal. The Suez Canal is not currently fully doubled; there are about 80 kilometres in the Suez Canal that have not been doubled, 50 kilometres in the north and 30 kilometres in the south. We did the preliminary studies, and they were presented to President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and there are two big companies working on feasibility studies to determine who can work with us”.

TV host Ahmed Moussa said there will be two channels, each 192 kilometres long, to solve the problem of waiting ships, adding that the project seeks to improve safety and eliminate bottlenecks such as the one that paralysed traffic in the waterway for six days in 2021 when the container ship Ever Given ran aground. The project also aims to increase the number of ships transiting the canal and reduce transit time to about 9 hours.

Osama Rabie, head of the Suez Canal Authority, said Suez Canal transit fee revenues fell by about 50.7% from the start of 2024 to 26 February, recording about USD 724 million compared with USD 1.469 billion in the same period last year. He pointed out at the international conference on maritime transport and logistics “MARLOG 13”, organised by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, that the number of ships transiting this year fell to 2,300 compared with about 3,900 ships in the same period of 2023.

The head of the authority expected total fee revenues this year to fall to USD 5 billion compared with about USD 10.249 billion in 2023, if tensions in the Red Sea and Houthi threats to navigation at Bab al-Mandab continue. According to Rabie, the authority collected about USD 10.249 billion last year compared with about USD 7.9 billion in 2022, a growth rate of 29.2%. A presentation at the conference revealed that 1,564 ships were affected by the Houthi attacks, of which 40 ships were attacked, 91 ships crossed the canal twice and 1,433 ships changed their route to the Cape of Good Hope.

He added that the crisis has affected the maritime transport sector, causing ship fuel costs to rise as a result of the longer journey around the Cape of Good Hope, which could lead to higher commodity prices and portends a global inflationary wave. He pointed out that freight rates for ships heading to Red Sea ports reached USD 6,800 per container compared with USD 750 per container before the crisis, while freight rates from the Far East to northern Europe reached USD 2,500 instead of USD 740.

He said the cost of insuring ships has risen tenfold, as shipping lines have imposed additional emergency risk fees. He continued that the Suez Canal’s share of world trade amounted to 10.7% of total global seaborne trade, about 15.4% of total global grain trade, 11.9% of total global trade in oil and its derivatives, and 26.3% of total global container trade.

<circle cx="1718" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1718" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="1930" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1930" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2142" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2142" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2354" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2354" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2566" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2566" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/>

After They Ended Their Strike, National Security Detains Five Mahalla Spinning Workers

The Union Solidarity Federation announced the detention of five Mahalla spinning workers after the end of the week-long strike demanding that the minimum income for public business sector workers be raised to EGP 6,000.

The Mahalla spinning workers ended their strike last Thursday, after a week-long strike, following a decision by the Minister of Public Business Sector, Mahmoud Esmat, to raise the minimum income in all the sector’s companies to EGP 6,000, which is considered a partial response to the workers’ demands.

<circle cx="1718" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1718" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="1930" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1930" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2142" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2142" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2354" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2354" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2566" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2566" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/>

An MP Asks the Government About the Mysterious Ras El-Hekma Deal

MP Samira El-Gazzar, a member of parliament for the Egyptian Social Democratic Party, submitted a question to the government about a major investment deal in the city of Ras El-Hekma. The MP said the nature of the investment is unclear, asking whether it is a purchase of land or a partnership between the state and the investor, and whether there are other instalments due from the investor.

The MP noted that public opinion and the people’s representatives in the House have not seen the sale or partnership contracts, despite the deal’s fundamental importance and the need to ensure it complies with the laws regulating foreign investors’ ownership of desert land.

El-Gazzar added: Is the project’s master plan limited to real estate and tourism activities, or does it extend to other industrial or agricultural activities or the establishment of public facilities such as airports, desalination plants and so on?

The MP asked about the plan of the housing and finance ministries to manage the billions of dollars resulting from the deal: will it enter the state’s general budget to be used to reduce the budget deficit and finance the priorities the state has announced, namely easing burdens on citizens, controlling inflation, managing the exchange rate and investment spending in real economy sectors such as industry, agriculture, communications and information technology? Or will it remain in the budget of the New Urban Communities Authority, in a way that does not guarantee the implementation of the government’s announced plan to rationalise spending, or be used to enter into new infrastructure projects that are not a top priority in the current economic situation?

The MP continued: Will part of the deal be used to pay off part of the external debt (other than what was announced regarding the UAE deposit), and will it be used to provide the foreign currency financing Egyptian banks need to release the goods piled up at customs, so that goods become available and part of inflation and high prices is brought under control?

<circle cx="1718" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1718" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="1930" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1930" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2142" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2142" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2354" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2354" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2566" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2566" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/>

The Commission Calls for the Release of Journalists

The Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms launched its bulletin on violations against the press and media, those working in journalism and media, and restrictions on the media.

The violations documented by the Commission in its bulletin over February 2024 ranged from the continued pretrial detention of journalists and the “recycling” of some of them into new cases, to the deteriorating health of imprisoned journalists, in addition to the restrictions some press institutions impose on journalists.

In its bulletin, the Commission recommended releasing all journalists in pretrial detention, stopping decisions to recycle released journalists into new cases, immediately amending the articles that allow journalists to be imprisoned in publishing cases, and issuing a law regulating the right of access to information enshrined in the constitution.

It also recommended lifting the blocking of websites and releasing prisoners held in cases related to freedom of expression and the use of the internet and social media, and working to provide all the guarantees and capabilities that allow media and journalistic practice to be carried out in complete freedom, without any legislative, political, economic or financial pressures or restrictions that could affect freedom of speech and the media.

On 6 February 2024, journalist and head of the Journalists’ Syndicate Khaled El-Balshy said the syndicate had submitted new requests to the Prosecutor General and the Presidential Pardon Committee to release detained journalists.

El-Balshy explained in press statements that the list includes the names of 23 journalists held in pretrial detention pending cases, with detention periods ranging from one to 4 years, in addition to non-member journalists who have been sentenced, noting that the syndicate requested a presidential pardon for them.

<circle cx="1718" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1718" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="1930" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1930" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2142" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2142" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2354" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2354" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2566" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2566" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/>

Mass Decisions to Extend Detention

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights revealed that the detention of more than 1,500 defendants had been extended by mass decisions in violation of the law. It explained in a statement that the Third Terrorism Circuit sitting at the Badr Reform and Rehabilitation Centre ordered the detention of 1,516 defendants in various cases, either by extending pretrial detention for 45 days in the absence of their defence or by postponing consideration of their detention, during several sessions held over four days, from 25 to 28 February 2024, via “video conference”.

The initiative pointed out in its statement that the sessions lacked the minimum guarantees of defendants’ rights to a fair trial. The circuit issued hundreds of decisions extending pretrial detention without examining any of the defendants’ files during the sessions, while lawyers were sometimes prevented from attending with their clients. Lawyers present were also not allowed to verify that their clients appeared on the display screen, were deprived of the right to plead, and were unable to hear the prosecution’s reasons for requesting continued detention or hear the defendants’ own requests or complaints.

It also pointed out that the current judicial year, which began in October 2023, has not seen the release of any defendant brought before the deliberation chambers held at the Badr terrorism circuits via “video conference”. Thousands of defendants thus remain in detention without any real consideration of their cases, and hence there is no hope that the court will issue release decisions, after hearings to review detention have turned into “mandatory” renewal sessions.

<circle cx="1718" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1718" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="1930" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1930" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2142" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2142" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2354" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2354" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2566" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2566" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/>

Two Students Detained on Charges of Violating Privacy

The Egyptian Public Prosecution yesterday, Sunday, ordered the pretrial detention of two defendants and the seizure of their phones, pending investigations into the death of Arish University student Nayera El-Zoghby, after charging them with “threatening to disclose matters relating to private life, and violating the sanctity of the victim’s private life”.

Nayera died on 24 February at the age of 19, after arriving at hospital with impaired consciousness and a severe drop in blood circulation; she fell into a coma and then died, after ingesting a toxic substance. On 2 March, the prosecution decided to reopen the investigation into her death after activists circulated claims that she had been blackmailed.

The prosecution concluded that the student Nayera died by suicide, after suffering psychological pressure resulting from one of her classmates, the first defendant, threatening to publish messages she had secretly transferred from the deceased’s phone to her own phone and sent to their classmate, the second defendant.

Social media users in Egypt circulated an account claiming that the first defendant had secretly photographed Nayera in the bathroom and then threatened to publish the photos after a quarrel between them.

The prosecution confirmed “the validity of that account by viewing the shop’s surveillance camera recordings”, and through these recordings it was also able to identify the number of the taxi the deceased had taken.

The prosecution warned against violating the sanctity of private life, stressing that it “will deal firmly with any incidents involving a violation of this right, and will also confront the phenomenon of publishing and circulating on social media news that would stir public opinion, spread discord and spread lies without pausing to verify information before publishing”.

The Ministry of Interior decided on Friday to suspend the father of the accused student, a police officer with the rank of major, from work pending the completion of investigations.

<circle cx="1718" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1718" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="1930" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="1930" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2142" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2142" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2354" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2354" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/><circle cx="2566" cy="211" r="56" fill="#fafafa" stroke="#9c9c9c" stroke-width="3"/><circle cx="2566" cy="202" r="50" fill="#647580" stroke="#4e5962" stroke-width="4"/>

The Egyptian Initiative Condemns the Renewed Detention of 38 Egyptians Who Demonstrated in Support of Gaza

The Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights condemned the renewed detention of 38 of the defendants held in case No. 2468 of 2023 over their participation in the demonstrations of 20 October 2023, to which official and party bodies had called in solidarity with the Palestinian people against the Israeli aggression. The initiative’s lawyers reported that the presiding judge of the circuit did not give the defendants or their lawyers the opportunity to speak.

Police forces had arrested citizens on 20 October in Alexandria and Cairo governorates over demonstrations called for by various political forces to protest against the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, around Tahrir Square and Abdeen occupation government is boycotting the truce and ceasefire talks on Gaza, which began yesterday, Sunday, in Cairo, after Hamas rejected its demand to provide a full list of the names of the hostages who are still alive.

For the second day in a row, the truce talks continue with the participation of representatives of the United States, Hamas and Qatar, and with the occupation government boycotting them.

Qatar hosted the previous round of indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel, and the latest draft announced from the Doha negotiations included an exchange of detainees between Hamas and Israel at a ratio of one Israeli detainee to 10 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, in addition to allowing displaced women and elderly people to return to their homes in the north Army-Owned Wataniya Company

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly held a meeting last week at which offers were presented for Wataniya Petroleum Services, owned by the Egyptian army, stressing the state’s seriousness about selling a number of army-affiliated companies.

Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, said the Fund had succeeded in resolving the main issues with the Egyptian authorities regarding its review of a USD 3 billion loan programme with Egypt, and that an additional financing package is expected to be finalised within weeks.

The question of offering army-owned companies for trading on the stock exchange or for direct investment dates back to 2022, when President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi announced the government’s intention to offer a number of army companies as a step to support the Egyptian economy, by broadening their ownership and attracting the private sector to participate in them. According to the World Bank, about 60 army-affiliated companies operate in 19 industries in Egypt, out of a total of 24 listed in the industry classification table.

Suez Canal revenues halve amid Houthi attacks as Egypt studies fully doubling the canal, while a court sentences the Brotherhood’s leader and others to death.

[412
18345,20103,20105,20100,20104,20101,20102,20098,20099,20106
710
post-18677","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics-en","tag-houthi-red-sea-attacks","tag-mahalla-workers-detained","tag-mass-detention-renewals-egypt","tag-muslim-brotherhood-death-sentences","tag-nayera-el-zoghby-case","tag-platform-events-case","tag-ras-el-hekma-deal-questions","tag-suez-canal-doubling","tag-suez-canal-revenue-decline","tag-wataniya-army-company-sale","kateb-zawia3-com
["GET
