The spokesperson cited the International Council of Museums’ Code of Ethics revised in June 2026, and the 2025 report “Laying Ancestors to Rest” by a British parliamentary group on Afrikan reparations, which called for an end to the display of Egyptian mummies. The spokesperson added that the organization is working to remove archaeological human remains from two other galleries at Kelvingrove, followed by a coffin and mummified remains at the St Mungo Museum in the city.

Nekht’s coffin dates to the 12th Dynasty (1985 to 1797 BC), and was excavated from Tomb 130 at Beni Hasan during University of Liverpool excavations between 1902 and 1904, and arrived in Glasgow as a gift in 1923. In the same city, the Hunterian Museum, run by the University of Glasgow, covered the mummy of the lady Shep-en-Hor with a cloth designed to hide it from visitors, and a spokesperson said she “deserves privacy in death,” while her decorated coffin remains on display. The two museums said they would consider returning the remains if they received a request from a state or an institution.

Murdo Fraser, a member of the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Conservatives’ culture spokesman, said the decision was “woke madness.” A spokesperson for National Museums Scotland said it is not considering any change to the display of human remains in its collections, which include mummies from Egypt and Peru.

Photo: Stinglehammer via Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0)

Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Museum removed the remains of Egyptian priest Nekht and other mummified parts from display, citing no documented consent from the dead.

[20481
20993,20992,20991,20995,20994,20990
710
post-24147","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-in-brief","tag-egyptian-antiquities-abroad","tag-egyptian-mummies","tag-glasgow","tag-hunterian-museum","tag-international-council-of-museums","tag-kelvingrove-museum","kateb-zawia3-com
["GET
