{"id":24341,"date":"2026-10-26T12:03:50","date_gmt":"2026-10-26T10:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/zawia3.com\/?p=24341"},"modified":"2026-10-26T12:03:50","modified_gmt":"2026-10-26T10:03:50","slug":"water-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/zawia3.com\/en\/water-week\/","title":{"rendered":"El-Sisi: Any bet on Egypt accepting a fait accompli on the Nile is a losing bet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi said, on Sunday, October 25, 2026, that &#8220;any bet on Egypt accepting the imposition of a fait accompli, or relinquishing its water security, is a losing bet,&#8221; in a <a href=\"https:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/5971496.aspx\">recorded speech<\/a> with which he opened the ninth edition of &#8220;Cairo Water Week,&#8221; in the presence of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.<\/p>\n<p>El-Sisi added that the presence of a river&#8217;s sources inside a state&#8217;s territory does not give it the right of unilateral control over a resource shared by several peoples, and that the Nile provides Egypt with more than 98% of its renewable water resources. He said Egypt respects the right of Nile Basin states to development, provided it is exercised responsibly and without harming others, and that prior notification, exchange of studies and consultation are &#8220;practical tools&#8221; for building trust and financing projects, not a means of obstructing development.<\/p>\n<p>El-Sisi pointed to Egypt&#8217;s cooperation with the states of the Southern Nile Basin in energy, agriculture and irrigation projects, and said he looks forward to applying the same approach in the Eastern Nile Basin in a way that serves the interests of Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia, saying: &#8220;Egypt&#8217;s hand remains extended to its brothers.&#8221; El-Sisi did not mention the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam by name in his speech.<\/p>\n<p>Ethiopia officially inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, and Egypt described the inauguration, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/originals\/2025\/09\/ethiopia-inaugurates-africas-biggest-dam-drawing-egyptian-protest\">letter<\/a> to the UN Security Council, as a unilateral measure that violates international law, and pledged to defend the existential interests of its people.
