Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber decided on Thursday, October 29, 2026, to halt tree pruning work at the Children’s Garden in Heliopolis and to refer the case to the Public Prosecution, after an inspection committee confirmed “excessive pruning” of some trees in the garden, which is run by the Heliopolis Association.

Cairo Governorate said in a statement that the committee was formed in coordination with Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad, from the General Authority for Cleanliness and Beautification of Cairo and Nozha District, after news reports and social media posts about the cutting of the garden’s trees circulated. The governorate attributed the referral to the association’s officials cutting the trees without consulting specialists or obtaining the necessary approvals, and without following proper technical pruning procedures.

The association’s officials submitted an internal report saying some branches posed a danger to children visiting the garden and had to be cut, while the governorate stressed the need to comply with technical controls and approved procedures, and urged media outlets and social media users to verify information with the relevant authorities before publishing it.

The incident follows a wide wave of anger sparked by the cutting of trees on streets in Greater Cairo last September, after which the Cairo governor pledged that no more trees would be felled and that pruning would be limited to cases of absolute necessity, and the Ministry of Environment instructed local councils not to allow the removal of any tree without written permission from the governor.
