The Doctors Syndicate, headed by Dr. Osama Abdel Hay, decided to formally address Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly to present its position on the number of students admitted to medical schools, and renewed, in a statement<\/a> issued on Saturday, October 31, 2026, its “categorical” rejection of any unstudied expansion in admissions, warning against repeating what graduates of dentistry, pharmacy and physiotherapy colleges have faced.<\/p>\n

The syndicate called for implementing two recommendations of the Medical Sector Committee of the Supreme Council of Universities: halting the admission of new students to medical schools that have not established their university hospitals, starting next academic year, and cutting the number of admitted students by 10%. It called for adherence to the presidential decree establishing the colleges, which gave them three years to regularize their status and establish their university hospitals, and for linking any increase in admissions to a published scientific study of the health system’s needs and to a real expansion in training places and the number of faculty members.<\/p>\n

The syndicate said that “the solution to doctors’ emigration can never come from increasing numbers,” and that it requires improving the work environment, raising wages, providing post-graduation education and training opportunities, and securing health facilities against assaults on medical staff. It added that doubling the internship period to two years instead of one, without providing the necessary resources and training places, led to clear shortcomings in training.<\/p>\n

The syndicate’s position rests on the decisions of its latest ordinary general assembly, which stipulated that students admitted next year by colleges that have not established university hospitals will not be registered<\/a> with the syndicate.<\/p>\n
