The defense of Lina Attalah, editor-in-chief of the Mada Masr website, announced on Monday, November 2, 2026, that Wednesday, November 25, 2026, had been set as the date<\/a> to hear the appeal against the ruling of the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court in case No. 11743 of 2026, which on Tuesday, October 27, fined her EGP 3 million (about $54,000) and ordered the website closed and its work equipment confiscated, on the charge of running a website without a license.<\/p>\n

The hearing date comes after a dispute over Attalah’s right to appeal. The Supreme Judicial Council said in a statement<\/a> on Saturday, October 31, that she had paid the fine and waived her right to appeal in writing, while Mada Masr said on Sunday, November 1, that she had not waived<\/a> this right, and that the defense had not obtained a copy of the case file or an official copy of the ruling.<\/p>\n

The Supreme State Security Prosecution had released Attalah on bail of EGP 100,000 (about $1,800) in case No. 9072 of 2026 (State Security), after questioning her on charges of publishing false news and running a website without a license. Mada Masr says it has submitted license<\/a> applications to the Supreme Council for Media Regulation since 2018, and only learned that one had been rejected during an investigation in 2022, after which it challenged the rejection in court.<\/p>\n
