Politician Ayman Nour, owner and board chairman of the Istanbul-based Al-Sharq TV, announced on Monday, 2 November 2026, that the channel is going through “a new financial and operational crisis” that may force it into “a temporary operational halt” or to rebuild the organisation “in a smaller and less costly form”, in a written statement<\/a> titled “Al-Sharq is not a channel of a state or a group”, which the channel’s presenter Ahmed Atwan read in a video<\/a> on the evening of Tuesday, 3 November.<\/p>\n

Nour said advertising revenue has been hit since 2023 “by pressure and contacts that we believe came from certain bodies towards foreign advertisers and sponsors”, and that their impact intensified during 2026, while the channel’s digital and YouTube revenue fell after the war on Gaza. He added that more than 300 Egyptians have supported the channel since its launch, that it is not the channel of a state, a group, a security agency or a businessman, that he will not ask for new donations, and that the channel seeks to meet its staff’s rights “within organised settlements”. He hinted at a possible return in 2027, writing that “stopping the broadcast is not a death sentence for the idea”, without setting a date for halting the satellite broadcast or giving the number of the channel’s staff.<\/p>\n

Nour noted in his statement that he had watched videos by television host Amr Adib and read press coverage of the channel. Al-Sharq began broadcasting on 25 April 2014 and stopped in March 2015 for financial reasons before returning the same year. The Egyptian authorities blocked the channel’s website, and the Administrative Court upheld the block in December 2019 in a case brought by Nour. In March 2021 the Turkish authorities asked Egyptian opposition channels operating on their territory to tone down their coverage, before Cairo and Ankara restored ambassador-level relations in July 2023.<\/p>\n
