Hanan Magdy, Governor of New Valley, announced in the early hours of Saturday, 7 November 2026, that a fire that broke out at the Farafra electricity complex had been brought under control, and said that power was cut to the remaining villages as a precaution until the safety of the connections was confirmed.
The governor explained that the fire broke out in a feeder outside the main control room and burned the outer metal cladding of the control room hangar, and said it caused no damage and did not reach the generating machines.
She added that cooling and damage assessment were under way, that the sector’s maintenance teams had been called in, and that emergency generators were placed at vital sites in the city. The governor did not specify the number of villages cut off from power or when it would be restored, and did not mention the cause of the fire.
