The Supreme State Security Prosecution decided on Sunday, October 18, 2026, to renew the detention of citizen Khaled Mostafa Mohamed Mohamed Abu Ageela for 15 days pending investigations in Case No. 5211 of 2026 (Supreme State Security), over Facebook posts in which he criticized high prices and the difficulty of living, as documented by the Association for Freedom of Thought and Expression.
The Association said a security force arrested Abu Ageela at his home on Monday, June 22, 2026, and held him in a location unknown to his family until he was brought before the prosecution on Monday, June 29. The prosecution charged him with using a social media account to promote the ideas of a terrorist group, and publishing and spreading false news and statements that could harm security and public order. The posts in question date back to 2024 and 2025, and the Association did not mention Abu Ageela’s city or occupation.
The case comes as the dollar exceeded 56 pounds for the first time at several Egyptian banks on Monday, October 26, 2026. In the same month, the Association documented the detention renewal of an Al-Azhar University student over his online activity.
