Political detainee Khaled Mohamed Abdullah El-Shafei died on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at Al-Ahrar Hospital after his health deteriorated, about six months after he was detained at the Ibrahimiya police station in Sharqia Governorate, as documented by the Committee for Justice on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

The committee said El-Shafei had been scheduled to undergo a leg amputation on Sunday, October 18, at Hehia Central Hospital, before he was transferred to Al-Ahrar Hospital. It added that he had previously been arrested in 2022. The committee did not state the cause of death, nor the case in which he was being held.

The Shehab Center for Human Rights said in a statement issued on Thursday, October 22, that El-Shafei’s condition had deteriorated sharply and that he was transferred to Al-Ahrar Hospital late, and attributed his death to what it described as “deliberate medical neglect inside detention facilities.” The center called for an independent investigation into the death, accountability for those responsible, and access to detention facilities for rights organizations and independent judicial bodies.

With this case, the number of deaths in detention documented by the Committee for Justice since the start of 2026 rises to 56, after 60 cases it documented in 2025.
