An official at the Gamal Abdel Nasser Hospital, run by the health insurance system in Alexandria, reported to Bab Sharqi police station on Thursday 5 November 2026 the theft of medicines from the hospital’s pharmacy, and a police report on the incident was filed and referred to the Public Prosecution, while security agencies began examining surveillance cameras, lifting fingerprints and questioning staff.

The General Authority for Health Insurance in Alexandria said in a statement on Thursday evening that the incident is under investigation, and that the dispensing of cancer treatment from the pharmacy resumes on the morning of Saturday 7 November. The authority did not announce the names, quantities or value of the stolen medicines, nor the number of patients affected by the halt in dispensing or its duration.

As of Friday morning 6 November, security agencies had not announced the identification of the perpetrators or any arrest. Cancer patients covered by health insurance rely on the authority’s hospital pharmacies to obtain their monthly treatment, and many of these medicines are expensive and not easily available in private pharmacies.
