Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels announced that metro ticket prices would rise starting this morning, Thursday 1 August 2024, by between 25% and 30%, depending on the number of metro stations. The price of a metro ticket for 17 to 23 stations has become EGP 15 instead of EGP 12, while the price of a metro ticket for more than 23 stations rose to EGP 20.
The authority said the price of a metro ticket for up to 9 stations has been raised to EGP 8 instead of EGP 6, while the price of a metro ticket for 10 to 16 stations was raised to EGP 10 instead of EGP 8.


How Did Prices Rise in 7 Years?
- 2017: The ticket price rose to EGP 2.
- 2018: The flat-fare system was cancelled again and the station-based system was applied, with the ticket ranging between EGP 3 and EGP 7 depending on the number of stations.
- 2019:
- Metro ticket price for 9 stations: EGP 5.
- Metro ticket price for 16 stations: EGP 7.
- Metro ticket price for more than 16 stations: EGP 10.
- 2020: Prices remained at the same levels as in 2019.
- 1 January 2024:
- The EGP 5 ticket rose to EGP 6 and covers 9 stations.
- The EGP 7 ticket rose to EGP 8 and covers 16 stations.
- The EGP 10 ticket rose to EGP 12 and covers 23 stations.
- A new ticket was added for more than 23 stations at EGP 15.
- August 2024:
- The ticket for 9 stations rose to EGP 8 instead of EGP 6.
- The ticket for 16 stations became EGP 10 instead of EGP 8.
- The ticket for 23 stations became EGP 15 instead of EGP 12.
- The ticket for more than 23 stations became EGP 20.
The government had announced on 25 July a new increase in petrol prices of up to 15%.
