Sudanese director and cinematographer Osman Mirghani was filming a documentary about the Gezira Scheme, launched by the British in 1925 to grow cotton and later one of the world’s largest irrigation projects, when war broke out in Sudan on 15 April 2023, bringing filming to a halt.

In October 2023, Osman crossed the desert into Egypt on an irregular migration journey, without papers or work, until a chance encounter with a group making a film rekindled his dream. In December that year, the war reached Gezira.

Today, Osman continues making his film and plans to return to Gezira to search for his protagonist, Zeinab Al-Amin, known as the first woman to drive a tractor on the scheme. Her fate has been unknown since the war.
